Everything we sell is food-grade nitrous oxide for culinary use. This page explains the legal position in Canada as we understand it, and links to the primary sources so you can check it yourself rather than take our word for it.
Never inhale nitrous oxide. Inhaling N₂O can cause loss of consciousness, oxygen deprivation, nerve damage from vitamin B12 depletion, and death. We sell it as a propellant for preparing food and drink. Nothing on this site is sold for any other use.
Nitrous oxide is a permitted food additive
Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is listed as a permitted food additive in Canada under the designation E942, used as a propellant and pressure-dispensing agent. That is the basis on which cream chargers are sold to kitchens, bars and caterers. It is the same gas that pressurises an aerosol can of whipped cream.
The line regulators draw is intended use, not the chemical
In 2026 Health Canada issued two Type I recalls covering twelve nitrous oxide charger brands. The stated reason in both was that the products were sold for inhalation without market authorization (DIN). The recalls make clear the distinction is about intended use and regulatory approval, not the chemical composition itself.
- RA-82056 (11 May 2026) — Blue Flag, Cosmic Gas, Exotic Whip, Nitrox, Prime Whip, Special Blue. Full detail on our recall page.
- RA-81742 (12 March 2026) — Bamboozle, Best Whip, Erotica, Gold Whip, Great Whip, Super Whip.
We do not stock the recalled products. Our catalogue is checked against both lists, and we do not list flavoured nitrous oxide at all — a flavour has no culinary purpose in a propellant, and it is the signal regulators have treated as evidence of intended use.
Food and Drug Regulations, section C.01.036.1
The Food and Drug Regulations (SOR/78-875) state: “No person shall sell, or advertise for sale, nitrous oxide to the general public.” Nitrous oxide is also separately a permitted food additive, and how those two provisions interact is unresolved. We are not lawyers and this page is not legal advice. If this affects your business, take advice on it.
How we sell
- Culinary use only. We do not sell for inhalation and we will cancel an order where that is the evident purpose.
- Adults 18 and over.
- No flavoured nitrous oxide, and no brand named on either 2026 recall list.
- Product pages state the fill purity the manufacturer states. We do not test it ourselves and we do not claim to.
Storage and handling
Store cylinders upright, below 50 °C, away from heat sources and direct sun. Do not puncture, crush or incinerate, including when empty. Use the correct regulator for the cylinder — cylinders from 320 g upwards do not thread directly into a whipping siphon. Keep away from children.
