Cream charger brands in Canada, compared

Purity, charges per cylinder, price per charge and recall status — the six brands worth considering, side by side.

Most cream charger comparisons are a list of brand names with adjectives. This one uses the numbers that actually differ: fill purity, how many charges you get, what that works out to per charge, and — the one nobody else publishes — whether the brand is on a Health Canada recall list.

Prices are the current prices on this site, and every figure comes from the product pages rather than from a manufacturer’s marketing sheet.

The 640 g class — the working size

This is what most busy kitchens actually buy: big enough to stop swapping cartridges mid-service, small enough to lift one-handed.

Brand Purity Charges From Recall status
Top Whip 640 g Food-grade ≈80 $41.99 Not listed
Smartwhip 640 g Food-grade ≈80 $60.99 Not listed
FastGas 640 g (12-pack) E942 ≈80 each $566.99 Not listed
Prime Whip 640 g — — Not sold here 🔴 RA-82056

Which of those three

  • Top Whip is the value pick at $41.99 — culinary-grade N₂O in a plain steel cylinder, with nothing in the price you are not using.
  • FastGas earns its place once you buy by the case: twelve 640 g cylinders at $566.99 is the restock size for a site charging all service.
  • Smartwhip costs more, and what you are paying for is the aluminium cylinder rather than steel — noticeably lighter across a long shift, and recyclable. If your team is moving cylinders around a lot, that is a real ergonomic difference rather than a marketing one.

Going bigger — 1364 g to 2 kg

Brand Size Charges From Recall status
Cream Deluxe Maxxi 2000 g ≈250 $129.99 Not listed
Cream Deluxe 666 g 666 g ≈84 $56.99 Not listed
FastGas 2 kg (pallet) 2000 g ≈250 each $5,191.99 Not listed

The Cream Deluxe 2 kg gives the best per-charge cost of the single cylinders here: roughly 250 charges for $129.99 works out near 52 cents a charge, against about 76 cents on a 640 g single. It is supplied with a nozzle, and at 2 kg a carry handle is worth having.

If you want cartridges, not cylinders

8 g cartridges thread straight into a whipper with no regulator. Simpler setup, higher cost per charge, no extra equipment to buy.

Brand Pack From Note
Mosa 8 g Box of 10, up to 600-case $10.99 EN16500-certified, recyclable steel
PrimeWhip 8 g Pluto 50-pack $58.99 Not named on the recall list — see the caveat

For volume, Mosa by the case is the standard answer: a 240-case is $135.99 and a 600-case $564.99, which brings the per-charge cost down sharply against buying boxes of ten.

The comparison nobody else publishes

In 2026 Health Canada recalled twelve nitrous oxide charger brands across two Type I recalls, for being sold for inhalation without market authorisation. If you are comparing brands, this is a more consequential difference than purity.

  • RA-82056 (11 May 2026) — Blue Flag, Cosmic Gas, Exotic Whip, Nitrox, Prime Whip, Special Blue
  • RA-81742 (12 March 2026) — Bamboozle, Best Whip, Erotica, Gold Whip, Great Whip, Super Whip

None of those twelve is sold here. Full detail, including which Prime Whip products are affected and the one that catches people out, is on the recall page. Our wider position is on safety and the law.

How to actually choose

  1. Pick the format first. Cartridges if you are low volume and want no extra kit; cylinders if you are charging repeatedly through a service. Cylinders need a regulator.
  2. Then the size. 640 g is the working default. Go to 2 kg when you are swapping cylinders more than once a service.
  3. Then the brand. Purity if your work is delicate, aluminium if your team handles cylinders constantly, price if the gas is doing a straightforward job.
  4. Then the pack size. The discount is in the pack price — a 48-pack is 25% below the single-unit rate. Every product page shows the per-unit cost at each tier.

Common questions

Which cream charger brand is best in Canada?

There is no single answer, but there is a sensible default: Top Whip is the cheapest 640 g cylinder we list, Smartwhip is worth the premium if your team handles cylinders constantly because its aluminium cylinders are lighter, Cream Deluxe gives the best per-charge cost at 2 kg, and Mosa is the standard for 8 g cartridges by the case. Avoid any of the twelve brands on the 2026 Health Canada recall lists.

Is Smartwhip better than PrimeWhip?

On availability, yes — decisively. The Prime Whip cylinder range is covered by Health Canada recall RA-82056, and primewhip.ca stopped processing online orders in response. Smartwhip appears on neither 2026 recall list and is a like-for-like 640 g replacement, in aluminium rather than steel.

What is the cheapest way to buy nitrous oxide for a kitchen?

Per charge, a large cylinder beats cartridges every time. A 2 kg cylinder at $129.99 gives roughly 250 charges, which is about 52 cents each, against roughly a dollar a charge for 8 g cartridges bought in small boxes. You need a regulator for cylinders, so the saving starts after that one-off cost.

What does cylinder purity actually change?

Most food-grade nitrous oxide runs at 99.9%, and a few brands fill a fraction higher. The practical difference shows on delicate preparations — a plain cream, a light foam — where any off-note has nothing to hide behind. On a flavoured or sweetened preparation you are unlikely to notice.
